BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION

All access control systems use some method to identify the user so the system can determine if they are authorized for entry. Some systems use coded cards, others use keypad codes but biometric identification is a form of access control recognition that uses the physical characteristics of the authorized user to grant access to a protected area.

State-of-the-art biometric readers for fingerprint and/or facial recognition provide unmatched security. With biometrics, each employee’s unique physical traits are gathered and stored within the company database. This data can provide a record of your staff and other guests’ attendance within your facility, whether it is a small company or a company that employs thousands.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION

There are several forms of biometric identification; each measures a different characteristic of the human body. Some systems measure features of the human eye, others measure finger or hand characteristics and still others measure properties of the human voice.

All these systems translate the biometric information into a machine-readable code, and that code is used much in the same way that card and keypad information is used to verify user access. Thus the features of other access control systems in most cases are also available in biometric identification systems.

Our qualified security system experts will gladly help you determine if and what type of biometric identification is right for your application. Contact us today by submitting the below form and one of our experts will get back to you today

ADVANCED FORM OF ACCESS CONTROL

Biometric identification is usually used in situations where you must be certain that the person requesting access is the same person who originally enrolled in the system and was granted access.

An example of this would be a high-security room, such as a server farm or hazardous bio-containment area. Cards and keypad codes can be stolen or copied, but biometric characteristics are unique to each person, ensuring the security and safety of others as well as providing protection to your facility and its contents. Since it’s only the individual’s personal biometric information that can activate the security code, access is only granted to those who have been recorded in your company’s database.

ENROLLMENT SYSTEM

In every biometric identification system, the user must “enroll” in the system. This usually means presenting the biometric characteristic to the system’s enrollment station (eye, finger, hand etc.) with the help of a system administrator.

The system then records and stores the biometric information in a database for later comparisons. These systems are generally used in conjunction with other security devices such as card readers or keypads. When a user requires entry into a space protected by a biometric identification device, they present an authorized access card (or press the correct code on a keypad) to the device controlling the door.

The system uses the card information to recall the stored biometric data. The user then presents their biometric data to the system’s biometric reader and it is compared to the information stored in the database. If there is a match, access is granted.

NON-INTRUSIVE BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION METHODS

The characteristic measured depends on the type of system installed. In the case of eye scan readers, the system will measure the vein patterns in the retina of the eye or the color configuration of the iris. This is a safe, non-intrusive technique that has been proven over years of successful use.

Finger print readers measure, as the name implies, contours of the fingerprint. The comparison techniques are much the same as those used in criminal investigations when matching fingerprints. Hand scanners measure the distance between knuckles in the finger and the overall size of digits. Both of the last two techniques are even less intrusive than the eye scan readers.

Biometric access control systems can include a variety of elements. As biometric security experts, we can evaluate your needs and create a customized biometric system that’s designed with your specific needs in mind.
